Thanks to its adorable lead character and her habit of screaming death metal during karaoke to deal with her lousy employer, “Aggretsuko” has become one of the most well-known Netflix animated flicks. She’s the snarling voice of Millennials, who are outraged by knowing injustice when they witness it.
Sanrio, the Japanese mascot firm that still deals with cutesy creations like Hello Kitty and Keroppi, has expanded to include more edgy, relatable creatures like the melancholy egg Gudetama and now Aggretsuko, which combines the words “aggressive” and “Retsuko.”
Because each episode is just approximately 15 minutes long, most “Aggretsuko” fans have already binge-watched all ten episodes. Because Netflix hasn’t announced a second season (yet), we’ll have to delve a little deeper to learn more about the red panda who sings for us.
1. Forehead Fierceness
When Retsuko lets go and lets out her karaoke fury, kanji for “retsu,” which means “anger” or “fierce” in numerous Japanese translations, emerges on her forehead. This will undoubtedly be an important feature to incorporate in all of your Retsuko cosplays.
2. What’s in a Name?
The initial portion of Retsuko’s name indicates “anger” or “fierce,” as previously stated. The second element, “ko,” means “kid.” Our heroine seems to fit the description of “rage-child” or “fierce-child.”
3. A Rare Voice
When you watch the series in its original Japanese language (subtitles over dubbing any day), it’s evident that Retsuko’s voice alters dramatically when she enters karaoke mode. Rareko (or Rarecho) is the voice of death-metal Retsuko, the series’ creator and director.
4. Aggretsuko’s Past
Aggretsuko was featured in 100 one-minute shorts that aired on Japanese television prior to the Netflix series. While many of them can be obtained online, Pony Canyon has assembled and issued a DVD of the shorts.
5. The Bird Is the Word
Many of Retsuko’s coworkers have names that are related to the animals they work with. Gori is a gorilla, Fenneko is a fennec fox, and Haida is a hyena (in marketing) (pronounced just the right way). Washimi’s name doesn’t reveal much, but if you’re an ornithologist, you’ve probably observed that she’s a terrestrial secretary bird. What is her job title at the firm? Of course, I’m the secretary. Washimi uses her legs to scare and smash items on the show, as the secretary bird is known for its strong legs that are used to strike and hunt.
But, to be honest, it’s just a pretty nice program. The friendships, relationships, and overall story progressions are incredibly pleasant and inspiring, not to mention the adorable character designs. I must tell you that you will most likely leave the show wanting all of the Aggretsuko merchandise you can’t locate, but I can also guarantee that you will leave smiling.
